Calcium and Vitamin D in the Prevention of Osteoporosis and Fractures
Professor Chris Nordin - Royal Adelaide Hospital
Osteoporosis is the index disease of calcium deficiency just as osteomalacia (rickets) is the index disease of vitamin D deficiency, but there is some overlap between the two deficiencies – at least in postmenopausal women, in whom bone loss and fractures can be significantly reduced by preventive treatment with these two nutrients.
Osteoporosis is largely predictable and preventable and clinical guidelines should reflect this fact. Pharmacists can play an important role in the identification of patients at risk, and the provision of appropriate products and advice.
The suggestion that calcium supplementation increases the risk of cardiovascular disease will also be discussed, noting that this suggestion is based on very weak evidence and is almost certainly incorrect.

It will also discuss issues around earning the respect and sales of the consumer.
